Rebecca’s style of treatment is very unique compared to a lot of other practitioners out there. Rebecca is not a traditionalist, but integrates the best of a number of therapies including a variety of very physical based techniques, combined with subtler holistic energy therapies.
Rebecca’s holistic, integrative approach and methods achieve incredible results (client testimonials) against a wide range of ailments; from short and long-term injuries, areas of tension and pain, to general stress-based conditions. Rebecca understands that pain is often only a symptom and that treating the pain alone usually results in a short term solution only. The cause must be found and treated for long term results.
The body and its systems are complex and very integrated, and a high level of understanding about energy-flow patterns, knowledge of anatomy and physiology plus a practical toolbox of a variety of techniques is required in order to give effective long term treatment. Rebecca believes that because our bodies are so integrated in the way they function, it is vital to apply an integration of physical techniques and appropriate holistic methods in order to match and achieve effective long term results.
Rebecca has over ten years of training (qualifications and training) and extensive experience with various approaches, enabling her to integrate them as opposed to just using one isolated method. Rebecca’s intensive sports background (Commonwealth Games - Rhythmic Gymnastics), own personal experience (fractured and displaced her vertebra ending her career as a Rhythmic Gymnast), varied training in body knowledge and extensive work experience with physical and holistic work means she can effectively determine where imbalances/blockages lie in the structure of the body, and then support the entire body’s return to a more balanced state. Rebecca not only treats through manual approaches, but also by unwinding the under-lying patterns within the nervous system.
Rebecca’s methods assist the release of non-efficient patterns or energy blockages while they are still hidden from awareness and hopefully before they have the potential to create more acute physical symptoms or ailments, as such, Rebecca’s treatment is also beneficial as a preventative against injury or for general maintenance.
Rebecca has also added, to her massage and energy methods, an educational option of self-care, a process in which the client learns to understand the cause of his/her physical symptoms and what needs to be done to help alleviate them, or maintain and prevent re-occurrence once Rebecca’s holistic work has commenced.

Health is a Balanced State
Homeostasis (meaning human equilibrium) refers to the belief that the human organism functions perfectly so long as it exists in a state of ease and harmony, free from mental or physical disturbance. In other words, health is a balance and healthy flow of all components; physical, emotional and mental, involving conscious and unconscious aspects of the human condition. Because these systems are interrelated and reflective of one another, wellness and harmony is experienced when all are balanced and effectively functioning in an integrated way.
The Nervous System
Human beings are a sum total of all experiences in their lives. All experiences, negative or positive, affect all systems as they impact on the individual’s nervous system, shaping reactions/actions, muscular memory and therefore posture. This is because the nervous system is the body’s control centre and communication network and it controls the actions and reactions of the body and it’s adjustment to the environment.
The nervous system is composed of two parts. The central nervous system, which is the control centre comprising the brain and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, which consists of nerves connecting other parts of the body to the control centre. Via a combination of electrical and chemical processes, the nervous system is used to control the functioning of the entire human body. Because the nervous system is the link between all, it governs and affects all other body structures/functions, and therefore the quality of body movement and overall health.
Everyday activities or experiences at work, home, exercise, or injury and emotional history all work together to develop patterns and quality of movement in your body. Some of these patterns are easy on the body and some are not. They may be caused by reactions to emotional/mental stress, or by physical posture or environments that aggravate our postural balance and therefore overall wellbeing.
For example, emotional or mental stress can create muscular tension/imbalance, which can cause discomfort, postural misalignment and increase risk of injury. Or when injured, the protection mechanism or compensatory patterns that result, can impact not only on the physical body, but the mind/emotions as well. This is because our mind and body are engaged in a dynamic interactive process that shapes the development and healing quality of the entire organism.
What happens in the body affects what happens emotionally and mentally and vice versa. Just like exercise/movement where safe alignment and technique is important for the physical body, the subtler energy flowing through the nervous system, mind and emotions needs to keep moving and flowing freely and efficiently too.
Blocked Energy Flow
Holistic therapy traces any distortions or blocks in the flow of messages from the nervous system to the rest of the body structures. Many imbalances are at first subtle, and do not come to the level of a person’s awareness until symptoms such as muscle pulls/injury, stress, exhaustion, colds, pain and/or irritability for example have ensued and magnified the problem.
Muscles become contracted because the nervous system sends messages or on-going brain-stem level impulses to motor units instructing them to shorten their muscle fibres. When a message is sent continually, the muscle becomes chronically contracted and the message to contract can then create a habitual pattern that the person doesn’t control consciously.
Releasing these blocks while still within the subtle energy flow throughout the nervous system can help prevent acute physical conditions, or acute physical conditions can be treated prior to, or alongside the energetic system in order to accelerate healing, or hold the results of physical massage work.
Rebecca’s knowledge and experience with physical and holistic work means she can assist the release of non-efficient patterns, or energy blockages, by using a variety of physical based techniques, combined with subtler holistic energy therapies, to unblock all the systems and therefore assist a natural and efficient flow of energy throughout, alleviating physical ailments, or other vast/holistic life bothers/complaints.
Holistic Energy Therapy
Injury, illness or pain is more likely to manifest, or have trouble healing when the subtle energy at the core of every individual has become stagnant, or blocked by a habitual response, and perhaps stuck in a less constructive way of functioning. Because the body functions as a unified whole, meaning structure and function are interrelated, the aim is to free up the bodies inherent self-corrective mechanisms to restore overall harmony and flow.
Holistic therapy traces any distortions or blocks in the flow of messages from the nervous system to the rest of the body structures. By Freeing up blocks on any level (physical or emotional), nerve impulses and transmissions are strengthened which stimulates the body’s self-correcting/healing mechanisms. Harmony can therefore be restored to the entire organism, which assists in the recovery from disorders such as depression, chronic fatigue, and even aids in the recovery from physical injury.
The subtle energy therapies that Rebecca uses include Craniosacral therapy, work with Bach Flowers and Pelandra Essences and Aromatherapy Oils. Craniosacral therapy, or the use of natural remedies, aid in the re-patterning of blocked neuromuscular pathways especially if the problem/s have been long standing, building up over a long period of time, or have locked into a habitual pattern of functioning due to a defence or protective mechanism.
Natural remedies (such as Bach Flowers, Pelandra Essences and Aromatherapy Oils) encourage new flow by expanding the systems out of the blockage/habitual pattern or holding, therefore healthier more integrated and effective neuromuscular pathways can re-establish again, in order for all systems to function more freely and therefore effectively, conducive to overall/holistic health and balance between structure and function.
Similar to the effect of remedies, during the assessment process, Craniosacral techniques are also integrated to begin to unwind any of the discovered blocks that are distorting the natural flow of messages from the nervous system to the rest of the body structure. By freeing up the transmission of nerve impulses, harmony can begin to restore so this assessment, if extended a little, is also good as a preventative or maintenance measure, not just as a diagnostic/assessment tool.
Assessment is required to diagnose areas requiring work, so an accurate personalised or tailor-made treatment plan/program can be devised to address the true needs of the individual.
During the assessment process (which normally takes about 10 minutes) the client can remain clothed, or draped with towels and lies comfortable on the table. By holding the feet in a very gentle manner, Rebecca’s intensive training enables her to thoroughly evaluate the whole body and locate any problem areas throughout, such as areas of blockage, tension or imbalance.
Why assessment is important as opposed to just treating what the patient expresses as the main problem area…
If you are in pain or injured, the assessment process provides accurate and specific information on the body as a whole, locating any other areas affecting the localised discomfort. This is useful as often you may not have been aware of other areas that relate, as the body is so integrated, often there is more going on than what meets the eye. Therapists such as Rebecca are highly trained to sense through light touch a restriction, tension and/or holding in your system and how it is affecting other areas in your body.
Once blockages are located, information on the cause of the problem (whether physical, mental or emotional) can emerge and an appropriate treatment plan, specific to your individual needs and requirements at the time, can be advised. This may be to release physical tension through methods such as deep tissue massage and trigger point work, and/or may require Craniosacral therapy, or the use of natural remedies such as Bach Flowers, Pelandra Essences and Aromatherapy Oils to aid in the re-patterning of blocked neuromuscular pathways.
The assessment is also good to do before devising a personalised training program [Rob, please make this link to ClubVO2’s Personal Training Page], or exercises for self-care, as these can then be appropriate to your true personal needs and goals presented at the time, so not just what you want to look like, but also how you want to feel.
Deep Tissue Massage and Trigger Point Work
When muscles are more contracted on one side or another, peoples bone alignment (body posture) is pulled in that direction. These tensions can become blocks, which distort the natural alignment of the whole body, and therefore all systems. This occurs when subjected to different kinds of stress responses, or injuries over an extended period of time.
Massage can be a very valuable way of re-educating tense muscles and to re-pattern inefficient or counter-productive neuromuscular habits that have created or have the potential to cause tensions, pain, blockages, imbalance and/or injury. Neuromuscular facilitation such as (trigger point releases) are good examples in massage to get rid of knots and encourage the nervous system and musculature to let go of excess tension in over contracted muscles, therefore re-aligning the body and aiding in a natural pain free posture.
Craniosacral TherapyCraniosacral therapy is a gentle form of bodywork based on releasing restrictions within the Craniosacral system which involves the nervous system and the connective tissues which surround it. The Craniosacral therapy can help to release any excess, unnecessary tensions, or habitual holding patterns present, helping to create a more relaxed, aligned structure and function.
Craniosacral therapy is often combined within the initial assessment, as it can be used as a diagnostic tool in assessing the overall health of the connective tissues, bone rhythms, and alignment and helps to locate the root cause of blockage. Through light touch, Rebecca is able to sense any restriction, tension and/or holding in your system and determine how it is affecting other areas in your body.
Craniosacral therapy involves working with the Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CFS) rhythm within the spinal column, or central axis of the body. This fluid, contained within a membrane, surrounds and is produced by the central nervous system, which also influences the stimulation of the glands and cellular activity occurring throughout the body. Therefore, when the cranial CSF pulse or fascia is restricted in any way, the potential for imbalance throughout the body is increased.
Craniosacral therapy is a safe, non-manipulative therapy, where the therapist simply reads the patient’s body and helps facilitate the body’s own healing process.
Bach Flowers and Pelandra Essences
Bach Flower and Pelandra essences work to restore a person’s mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. These essences/remedies help to identify and transform deeply held patterns, correct emotional imbalances, release energetic blockages and stimulate the body to heal itself. The essences create a gentle shift in the emotions and mind which, in turn, effects healing of the whole person. The essences trigger a mechanism within the brain and central nervous system that stimulates the body’s internal healing process, resolving root causes.
There are 38 individual Bach Flower, and 24 Pelandra essences to select from, so the information gathered through either the craniosacral and energetic assessment, or through a client consultation can assist in creating an effective personalised essence, which addresses the appropriate and specific needs of the individual.
Aromatherapy uses plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person’s mind, mood, cognitive function and health. Aromatherapy links to the olfactory system (sense of smell), limbic system (memory and emotion) and the autonomic nervous system, triggering psychological and pharmacological effects on the nervous system and mind.
Aromatherapy is very effective in treating musculoskeletal problems. Some essential oils bring warmth to the skin, aiding circulation and healing and provide a considerable amount of pain relief through their analgesic effect. Aromatherapy massage is a very effective treatment where the pain is due to muscular fatigue, spasm, or tension. There are many essential oils that will reduce pain in the short term and treat the muscular problem or injury in the longer term.
The use of Pharmaceutical grade essential oils has had many tests, research and clinical trials proving the therapeutic effects on the physical body and holistic state of mind.
Self Care Education
Self-care consists of learning a series of physical techniques and exercises designed to promote physical health by unwinding muscular tension/stress, similar to the benefits of physical massage therapy, but a do it yourself approach.
Slow anatomically aligned movements performed with the co-ordination of mind/body awareness can be used to reprogram and retrain unsafe, inefficient movement pathways or habitual holding patterns occurring sub-consciously throughout the systems.

Rebecca Blake’s Client Testimonials
“I was treated by Rebecca Blake in August 2010 when I had problems with my back and again in January 2011 when I was having problems with my hip and lower back. I was amazed at the result after she gave me massage, cranial and energy work. I was able to get up and walk more easily and the pain had gone within a few days. I had been treated for the same complaint the year before at the physiotherapist and it took me nearly three months before I came right. I feel Rebecca’s treatment was ninety five percent more effective for me.”Mary
“Rebecca has been coming into our office on a weekly basis to massage some of us throughout the last couple of months of 2010. I have had a 40 minute session every week. I do 4–5 pieces of exercise every week and I find Rebecca invaluable for ironing out all the knots and strains. Her ability to find the source of the problem through her holistic approach is amazing to me and it makes a huge difference to my ability to be able to compete and enjoy sport and exercise. I thoroughly recommend her.”Sean
“I had been suffering painful occipital headaches almost daily for a couple of months. I decided to see what having physio treatment could do for it. After 4 sessions there was little improvement. It took just two 40 min sessions with Rebecca concentrating on my neck and shoulder area and the headaches were gone. She pinpointed immediately the cause of the headaches and worked on the area solidly. The technique Rebecca uses is different to the general massage we all know, I highly recommend Rebecca’s holistic approach to any Corporate / person and encourage then to give it a go. You will definitely feel the better for it.”Donna
